I wish there was some alternative way to begin a letter for those business associates who just cannot be described by any stretch of the imagination as "dear." I'm writing a letter to opposing counsel on a very contentious commercial lease case, who has done essentially everything she could be difficult, obnoxious and generally impossible to work with, and it's finished except for the salutation. Try as I might, I cannot bring myself to call her "dear." Even if it's just a formality. I feel more like starting: "Difficult Ms. [Counsel]." "Barely Tolerable Ms. [Counsel]." "Despised Ms. [Counsel]."
Okay, fine, perhaps that's going a little too far. I suppose I could always drop the salutation and go with "Ms. [Counsel]:" although it just doesn't give me the same satisfaction as something outwardly polite but unquestionably distant.
