Except that, I mean, there kind of is. You see, just after my last post (in JANUARY), I had the brilliant idea of adding weekly one-mile swims to my workout regimen, since it was too damn cold to run as many miles in a week as I should -- and, since my friend just found a local pool that wasn't too gross and we'd both been lifeguards all through high school, it seemed like the perfect plan. So we went and swam our 72 laps (which is either 1 mile, .9 of a mile, or 1.1 mile, according to later research on the topic), and were all pleased with ourselves, so did a last "silly swim" lap to celebrate -- which basically involves propelling yourself through the water in all manner of ridiculous-looking ways - ending in the ever-popular "tickle tee snap" backstroke (for anyone NOT having attended the frightening "beginner swim" classes in my town, it's a modified backstroke where you stick your arms out a 90-degree angles to your body and then "snap" them down to your sides - you'd be surprised how fast you can move). This is normally super fun and results in much giggling.
Unfortunately, this time it resulted in quite the "concussion" or "closed head injury," depending on who you believe out of the many, many, MANY doctors I've seen in the last three months. But a weird one. Because, despite whacking the top of skull directly into the steel-and-tile wall at the end of the pool just as I'd "snapped" one last time, I didn't lose consciousness. My head didn't even hurt. And nothing really bothered me until nearly a week later, when I went out on a nighttime six-mile run in 30-degree weather. When I got back, I felt as if I'd spontaneously contracted the world's most violent sinus infection - but only in my skull. And that began three months of excruciating pressure in my head, such that sleeping at any angle less than 90 degrees from the mattress was impossible, driving more than ten minutes was a crazy dream and talking on the phone -- well, let's not even get started on that. I went to my family doctor, who stared at me like I was crazy and said "oh, you just have a headache, take some Advil" (for which sage advice I paid $50, and then sought out a new family doctor who went somewhere other than "The University of Thirteen-Minute Diplomas"); a neurologist (suggested by the family doctor after I pitched a fit over how THIS IS NOT A HEADACHE, so you can imagine how fab he was) who AGAIN told me that all I had was a headache and I might just want to dial down the crazy, because the CT scan CLEARLY showed that my brain was normal; and then finally a new internist who explained that head injuries are "funny like that" and can cause all of the terrifying symptoms that caused me to think that I was tragically going to die at 28 OF SWIMMING - visual disturbances, light-image perseverance, pressure in one's head that feels like someone is trying to inflate your brain to twice its regular size, a total inability to think clearly or really just put two sentences together in a rational-type way -- and explained that it can take anywhere from one to three months for those symptoms to go away.
Trust my brain to be the one that clearly is going to need the WHOLE three months to get better. So, that's the reason for the absence -- this is the first time since January that I've had enough energy, cognitive power and ability to sit up straight to post an entry. And, yes, I know, it's possibly the world's least interesting and most boring post, but HELLO, brain injury, people! Let's just be glad it's not about how the purple shimmering smells violently grin about loud chairs!
Concussions must be catching!
Seriously, though - glad you are still alive. This story is exactly why I don't swim (besides the fact that I can't swim). It's dangerous!

Glad you are feeling better. Not to be a downer, but make sure you have another follow-up, even if there are no more symptoms. Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) can be really tricky, and cause long-term problems for some people (hopefully not you, though!)
